about

“Kathleen Warrior Queen” is special because it features the use of a charango in the main guitar melody line. Some of the best tape loops on the record are shown off in this song. I love the dramatic toms, I wish I used a timpani. I love the Roland OS9 going through the Rat pedal which precedes the second beat drop. This song is for my mom, well the whole album is really. This was the song I was working on when she passed.

One of my favourite moves on this album happens in “Ruined With Pastels”. I took a cello sample and chopped it up into a nice melody. I then took that Melody to the studio and turned it into a tape loop, on a small reel to reel machine. We recorded lots of beautiful Wurlitzers, Pianos, Percussion etc., If It wasn’t for Jose and his wondrous studio this album would sound cold and boring in comparison to the beautiful Astral Mansion we have today.

“You Are the Good Thing” is one of the best mixed songs on the album. One of my favourite moments in this whole album is when the beat drops out and we hear only Wurlitzers and tape loops hissing and humming by themselves. During the making of this album I found myself drowning in grief and I was wondering constantly “When will the good thing happen??”. I had to come to the realization that I WAS THE GOOD THING. My ability to be good was the only counter force to all the grief and tragedy. It’s corny but this is where the song title comes from.

The only song that didn’t enter Jose’s studio is “Lead Guitarist in a Band”. This song was taken to my friend Hank’s house. Hank VH was in The Auras with me and also Our Father Star. He played the last guitar solo in the song, the best one actually. The whole song is trying to make fun of guitar players. I love the simplicity in the lines underneath he heavy bass. I love the slide guitar that stays on one note over and over again. Detuned drop C guitars floating over a cartoonish house beat…why not?

“Rhythm Guitarist in a Band” Is just a tape loop of my voice.

“New Theme Song” Is a tune I made while I had covid. I was basically saying ‘I’m not afraid of covid, or anything’. I decided this song was not good enough for the album and threw it out for months. On a whim I listened back to it and it hit me like a ton of bricks. I really end up killing a lot of my greatest ideas from working on stuff for too long. I’m not sure why I did the British accent.

“Spellcaster Deluxe” is a long droning attempt to finish the album. I love that it doesn’t have a snare, and doesn’t seem to care whether you listen or not. One of my favourite parts in this tune is near the end when what sounds like a space dog starts barking. This sound was from a small Casio keyboard at Jose’s place, and the delay effect actually came from the keyboard, It just happened to be in time with the song! I also love the subtle guitars and the use of the Blue Sky Reverb and Ms20 Mini throughout. The ending is just me wanking around on a Space Echo.

“Wombification” was the sound that originally started “Spellcaster Deluxe”. This little ambient ditty is performed live using the Ms20 mini, the Intelligent Harmony Machine and the Afterneath Reverb.

I hope you enjoy the album.
